SyNOPSIS

In the Shadow of Flexner is a new documentary film by Justin Smith. The film exposes the corruption that led to the elimination of all forms of natural medicine from medical education.

The pivotal moment in history was in 1910 when the Flexner Report was published. This report was published with the intent of gaining a monopoly on medicine for the industrial capitalists. At that time, orthodox doctors were unpopular. In general, mild treatments more akin to nature were preferred. However, orthodox doctors and industrial capitalists set out on a plan to discredit any form of treatment that was not a drug or surgery. 

Although orthodox medicine has produced some truly lifesaving medicines, at the same time, millions of people have been harmed by a medical system that puts profit before patients’ health.

Globally, more money than ever is being spent on healthcare, but the number of people with chronic conditions is rapidly increasing. This is not due to people living longer, since these chronic conditions are affecting the same number of young people.

The various forms of so called alternative medicine lend themselves to the treatment of chronic disease, however, conventional doctors do not know anything about these treatment options and in most cases automatically dismiss. One of the biggest crimes against humanity is also the removal of nutritional science from medical education.

One-hundred-and-thirteen years after the Flexner Report, it is time to investigate if our current system is serving us well. This is something that affects us all. 

The film includes the story of six medical professionals who have fought hard, both inside and outside of the system, to bring a wider range of medical treatments to patients that offer genuine benefit. In each case these doctors have been met with criticism and received professional attacks from colleagues. In some cases they have been relentlessly pursued by the medical establishment.

This film is important and timely. Increasingly, people are questioning the influence that the pharmaceutical companies have over the medical system. Moving forward it is important to know first of all how we ended up with the current system. So that we can determine where things went wrong and call for a more integrated medical system.
